Villagers
Translated by Aaron Crippen

the sun bakes this mud village
bakes the round pottery and people
emerging from low-hanging eaves
squinting against the sunborne
torpor     walking toward water
toward their one clear desire

their blood is thick
in their hair     the roots of trees
